Driving in the Snow

If you learn nothing else while living in Beaver Creek, you learn how to drive in the snow. The snow clearing by the town is definitely good, but there will of course be plenty of times when the roads are dicey. You learn quickly that 4 wheel drive does not mean 4 wheel stop, that even if you’re careful, the guy next to you might not be. For visitors not used to these conditions, it could be worth it to not have a car. There is plenty of slopeside lodging and free shuttles to the mountain. There is also grocery delivery, ski rental delivery and airport shuttles and taxis. You really have the ability to make your stay as convenient as possible.

Living in a Resort Town

Living in the Vail Valley, a resort community, is an unbelievable luxury. As someone who enjoys new gear (who doesn’t), I love browsing the Beaver Creek ski shops and seeing all the Beaver Creek ski rentals people use. And it seems like if its not snowing, the sun is shining. But there are surely downsides. The main one is that when the rest of the country is on vacation, we are working. The busiest times of the year are of course holidays, because that’s when people have time off the travel. In turn, I wasn’t able to spend Thanksgiving or Christmas with my family this year. No complaints though, as living here is a fine trade off.

The Gashouse

Beaver Creek, besides for its excellent skiing, is known for its array of fine dining options. But I urge you, if possible, leave your Beaver Creek ski rentals behind one evening and venture outside the gates. Less than 10 minutes away awaits my favorite Valley restaurant, The Gashouse. It’s a casual setting that feels more like a hunting lodge than a restaurant. The menu highlights are a wide variety of game and seafood. Quail, duck, elk, venison, bison, lobster, shrimp, crab…you can’t go wrong.

Beaver Creek Safety

Beaver Creek was recently awarded the 2009 National Ski Area Association Best Overall Safety Award. This is something the resort should be very proud of. Every time you ski it’s a risk, and it’s nice to see that Beaver Creek is being proactive in protecting its clients. Personally, I visited a Beaver Creek ski shop at the beginning of the year and bought a helmet. I never ski without it. I also urge all our Beaver Creek ski rental customers to use one. It’s the least you can do to protect yourself. Furthermore, I stopped listening to music while skiing. I found it distracting and dangerous as I was less aware of my surroundings. Accidents happen, but if everyone is careful, we can all limit problems.

Hockey Tournament in Avon

This weekend marks the continuation of a pond hockey tournament in Avon, Colorado. Avon is the town that Beaver Creek
is located in. I grew up playing pick-up pond hockey all winter long. After school and on weekends, we would walk over to the local pond, strap on our skates and play until the sun went down. It brings back great memories and makes me want to trade in my Beaver Creek ski rentals for some ice skates, if only for an afternoon. In this case though, I think I’ll be more of a spectator. And if you have the ice skating fever but don’t want to leave the Village, next to all the Beaver Creek ski shops is an ice skate rental window to allow you to enjoy the mini rink in the Village.

East vs West Skiing

I’ve done far more skiing in the Western US than the East, but everyone knows the stereotypes. The East is not as steep and icy. The West has more challenging terrain and gets powder. The beauty of these stereotypes is they are true. Living in Beaver Creek currently, the snow conditions are relatively mediocre. But the funny thing is, I have siblings in town who have never skied out west before, so they have no idea. They are just stoked to be cruising the Vail Valley on their Beaver Creek ski rentals. The fact of the matter is, regardless of the conditions here, the skiing pretty much always trumps east coast skiing. And then you see the trickle down effect, where they see a higher level of skiing and feel the need to purchase new gear at the Beaver Creek ski shops.

K2 Snowboard Demo

On January 10th at Beaver Creek, there is an on-mountain K2 snowboard demo. Granted I know very little about snowboards, but this seems like it might be cool. Sounds to me like it will be good snowboarders doing tricks on K2 boards, mixed with some commentary from K2 reps. And if you’re a snowboarder, you can use your new knowledge to request a board for your next Beaver Creek ski rental, or purchase one from any Beaver Creek ski shop.

Proper Ski Boot Fit

One of the most important aspects of a successful Beaver Creek ski rental is the fit of the boot. Fitting an experienced skier is easy because they know what ski boots should feel like and they know what they want them to feel like. But it sometimes get tricky when fitting a new or inexperienced skier. They simply are not used to the feel of a ski boot. The fact of the matter is that whether you are skiing in Beaver Creek or Burlington, VT, ski boots are not that comfortable. The goal is a tight, performance fit so you can control your skis. They absolutely should not feel like your sneakers. Keep this in mind next time you are getting fit for your ski rentals.

Magic that Rocks

There is a magic show in Beaver Creek on Christmas afternoon. I’ve probably only seen legitimate live magic once in my life, but it was a lot of fun. It was in NYC and my friend actually got called up on stage. Do I believe in magic? I don’t think so. But regardless, it can be great entertainment. And it’s a good change of pace from browsing the Beaver Creek ski shops.
